At the upcoming World Expo, which will take place in Osaka, Japan, from April 13 to October 13, 2025, Austria will present domestic innovations to an international audience of millions under the motto “Composing the Future”. The selected projects range from drone-based analysis for urban climate optimization to a revolutionary technology for wastewater treatment and power generation to climate-friendly visitor guidance in tourist hotspots.
As part of the digital and interactive exhibition presentation, the Austrian pavilion will showcase innovative ideas and solutions for shaping a responsible, sustainable future – in line with the EXPO motto “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”. As part of the “Call for Innovations”, Austrian companies, start-ups, universities, research institutions and other organizations were able to apply. The aim was to find innovations, products or services that have a significant positive effect on the market, environment or society.
From over 150 submissions, a total of 89 outstanding projects in 10 categories were selected for the Innovation Lab Austria in the Austria Pavilion:
- Green Tech
- Green building
- Mobility & Automotive
- Semiconductor & Smart Factory
- Healthcare
- Life Sciences
- Tourism
- AI & Technology
- Creative Industries
- Research & Education
The selected projects are just a small insight into a whole range of impressive domestic developments. Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Kocher is delighted with the increasing innovative strength of the Austrian economy: “Austria is a country of ideas and a center of innovation that actively shapes progress, both in Europe and in the world. Proof of this is Austria’s 6th place in the EU innovation ranking, a top position in patent applications and a research rate of 3.34 percent. Whether in the field of green tech and green building, semiconductor research, mobility solutions or artificial intelligence – Austria’s companies, start-ups and research institutions create solutions for global challenges and consistently pursue the goal of being competitive on the global market with their innovative strength. The ‘Innovation Lab’ in the Austrian pavilion at EXPO 2025 Osaka offers them the perfect stage for this.”
The Austrian business location benefits enormously from research and the resulting innovations. In this context, WKÖ President Harald Mahrer emphasizes the entrepreneurial spirit required for this: “Innovation means change through new ideas and technologies. This requires courage and openness to new things. Our companies are and will remain the key players for innovative strength in Austria. Their ability to translate research into concrete innovations that are competitive and in demand on the markets ensures progress, growth and prosperity. EXPO 2025 offers an incomparable stage to present this strength to a global audience and create new opportunities for Austrian companies.”
