This agreement marks a significant milestone in the advancement of sustainable battery recycling solutions.

Under the agreement, Duesenfeld will license its patented processes, including deep discharging and low-temperature drying. ANDRITZ will act as the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) or EPS (Engineering, Procurement, and Supply) contractor, responsible for delivering the recycling plant and manufacturing key equipment such as shredders and dryers. Additionally, ANDRITZ will provide comprehensive service and supply spare and wear parts throughout the operating lifetime of the equipment and plant.

Till Bußmann, CTO of Duesenfeld, says: “This partnership marks a major step forward in the circular economy, combining advanced expertise, innovative technology, and long-standing experience in plant engineering to provide comprehensive solutions for our customers.”

The collaboration positions ANDRITZ and Duesenfeld as the ideal partners for the mechanical pre-treatment of lithium-ion batteries, especially in the production of black mass. The partnership aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of battery recycling processes, contributing to a circular economy.

As a first reference project, the Duesenfeld pilot plant in Wendeburg will be upgraded with ANDRITZ equipment, including state-of-the-art shredders and dryers. This upgrade will showcase the combined expertise and innovative solutions offered by both companies.

“We are excited to join forces with Duesenfeld and leverage our combined strengths to drive innovation in battery recycling,” said Thomas Gemeiner, Vice President Recycling at ANDRITZ. “This partnership underscores our commitment to providing economically viable, cutting-edge solutions that support a sustainable future, especially when it comes to reducing CO2 emissions.”

Duesenfeld is a German company that specializes in the environmentally friendly recycling of lithium-ion batteries. With its innovative, patented processes, Duesenfeld achieves a material recovery rate of over 90% while significantly reducing CO₂ emissions. In 2024, the company was awarded the German Sustainability Award, underlining its leading role in the field of sustainable battery recycling.
