Transformers that can convert electrical voltage into a higher or lower voltage have been manufactured in Weiz for more than 130 years. The production of these transformers can only be automated to a very limited extent and requires specialized personnel. The plant is a leader in transformers for use in wind turbines on the high seas (offshore); overall, it has an export quota of 80 percent and supplies components to over 70 countries. Worldwide, 80 percent of offshore wind turbines are equipped with transformers from the plant.
In addition to transformers for the wind industry, the Weiz plant also manufactures particularly space-saving and low-noise power transformers for electricity grids. In August 2024, the 5,000th power transformer with a total weight of 324 tons – including around 65 tons of copper wire alone – will be delivered to a customer in New York City.
“By expanding our production capacities, we are responding to the growing global demand for wind turbine technology. The energy transition cannot take place without transformers. That is why we are investing in the expansion of our plant in Weiz to ensure that our urgently needed products continue to make a difference in the world’s wind farms and power grids,” explains Christian Ettl, head of the plant in Weiz.
